Alexandre Pantoja earns and Alexander Volkanovski retains their desired UFC titles
The UFC 290 came to a conclusion with yet another dominant title defense from the noted UFC featherweight champ, Alexander Volkanovski. Although the former Interim Featherweight champ, Yair Rodriguez, tried to find and also landed a few of his high-flying strikes, they simply weren’t enough to stop ‘Volk’. ‘The Great’ closed down the distance, effectively allowing ‘El Pantera’ only a little space for his acrobatic strikes.
‘Volk’ also made superb use of his ground game and took Rodriguez down multiple times. However, it was a “big right from Volk” in the UFC play-by-play commentator Jon Anik’s words that stunned Rodriguez. ‘The Great’ then scored another takedown on Rodriguez and finished off the fight with some brutal ground and pound.
Moving on, the co-main event of UFC 290 gave UFC fans a new Flyweight champion. The former king, Brandon Moreno, failed to outwit the ghosts of his past losses against his UFC 290 opponent, Alexandre Pantoja, which cost him his title. The fight went to its full length, with both fighters showcasing some superb skills.
Pantoja started off strong, claiming the first round. Moreno also showcased some superb striking in the entire bout. But it was Pantoja’s ground game where he took away most points. However, his split decision victory and taking control of Moreno’s UFC Flyweight Championship was later questioned by a few pundits of the game as well.

Dricus du Plessis gets the better of Robert Whittaker and will face off against Israel Adesanya
The virtual UFC Middleweight title shot eliminator between Dricus du Plessis and Robert Whittaker ended in a shock to a number of UFC fans. The underdog in the bout, du Plessis, finished off the former Middleweight champ in the second stanza of their bout. Both fighters took a no-holds-barred approach in the bout and swung hard. However, it was ‘Stillknocks’ ground game that earned him a significant advantage over ‘The Reaper’.
du Plessis landed a stiff left jab that stunned Whittaker in the second round. He was also quick to follow it up with another one-two combination that had ‘Bobby Knuckles’ on the floor. After that, it was only a few seconds of vicious ground and pound from ‘Stillknocks’ that saw him earn a victory over his rival Whittaker.
There was further drama as the “real African” debate sprung up once more post du Plessis’s victory. The UFC Middleweight champ and du Plessis’s rival, Israel Adesanya, was brought into the octagon during du Plessis’s post-bout interview. The two instantly got into an altercation and hurled slurs at each other before Du Plessis left the octagon.
