Amanda Nunes declared retirement following her UFC 289 title defense
A number of fans had already labeled Amanda Nunes as the greatest female fighter in the history of the UFC. The date 10 June came as one more proof of that fact. The UFC champ-champ Amanda Nunes absolutely dominated her UFC 289 opponent, Irene Aldana ad earned a unanimous decision victory. In the process, she also defended her UFC Bantamweight title and retained her champ-champ status. However, the following event might have disheartened a lot of fans.
After her UFC 289 post-fight interview, Nunes cut out her UFC gloves, laid down both her UFC championships in the octagon, and declared a retirement from her one-decade-long decorated UFC career. Her wife, Nina Nunes, who’s also a former UFC fighter, and daughter Raegan also accompanied her inside the Octagon to celebrate her victory.
Nunes also stated that it was primarily her mother who didn’t want her to stay in this sport of blood and injuries any longer. Further, Nunes has a beautiful family and also packs a good bank balance to fulfill her needs. Hence, the decision of her retirement is quite understandable. Sonnen stated, “You have Conor himself saying I haven’t gotten around to doing the paperwork. You got USADA saying we’re gonna fight, we’re gonna fight but we’re gonna do it this way which is in 180 days. You got Chael over here saying there’s nothing about this fight that looks like you’re fighting”. He further stated, “There’s three people, the boss, Conor, and Chandler. They weren’t together. They were interview, phone call, interview, and asked what weight class they were fighting at. Three different answers.”
