Carney said, “[Spotify] treats almost every stream the same. What they need to do, in my opinion, is say, ‘This guy Joe has good taste in music. He follows 500 bands, which means there’s no possible way that he’s gonna be listening to all 500 of those bands in even a six-month period of time — but when he does choose to listen to a song, it’s worth like 10 times, versus this person who’s listening to ‘Old Town Road’ a thousand times a day.”

He further added, “Because Joe is actually engaging with our thing, not just streaming a song for free, like a Pavlov’s [dog], mouth salivating every time he hears ‘Old Town Road.’”

While Carney may have not directly taken a dig at Joe Rogan, the UFC color commentator has found him and his podcast in trouble before.

Since India Arie posted the video, several other artists too expressed their discontent over the same. However, Rogan was quick to apologize and said that what he said was taken out of context.

A similar incident had taken place previously. Musician Neil Young removed his music from Spotify. He believed that Joe Rogan and Spotify were spreading misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccine. Similarly, in December 2021, a group of doctors and scientists wrote and signed a letter asking Spotify to moderate misinformation. The letter further stated that Rogan was discouraging vaccination in children and young people.
