Every fighter’s journey has its final chapter, and for lightweight legend Dustin Poirier, that chapter is nearing its end. The former interim champion is preparing for one last fight, which he has dubbed his “last dance.” As speculation swirls around who his final opponent will be, one name that has come up is rising star Paddy Pimblett. However, the Louisiana native vehemently opposed this idea and cited a “legends only” match-up for his swansong. Owing to this, the Englishman took a swipe at Poirier over his retirement decision, adding fuel to the fire of potential matchups.
At UFC 302, Poirier’s third bid for undisputed gold fell short as he lost to Islam Makhachev in the final round. Pimblett, like many others, was impressed with Poirier’s performance, acknowledging the grit and determination he showed, even in defeat. With that world-class showing, the Liverpudlian finds it hard to comprehend why ‘The Diamond’ would choose to retire with one more fight when he’s at the top of his game.
During an interview with ESPN’s CC Legaspi, ‘The Baddy’ ridiculed ‘The Diamond’, as he stated, “I think he should have more than one fight. He looked good in his last fight… I don’t understand why you’d retire when you looked good… he must be an idiot.” Regardless, fighting a legend won’t be a bad idea, and hence, Paddy Pimblett has kept himself as an option in case the UFC considers him to be his last opponent. “I think I beat Dustin Poirier so I’d love to fight him,” the confident Liverpudlian added.

Moreover, there have been many UFC fighters who retired at the top of their game, with the most recent one being Robbie Lawler. The former welterweight champion scored a knockout victory against Niko Price at UFC 290, and that too, in the first round. Maybe Poirier has a similar plan in mind, but Pimblett does not see any sense in that decision.

Meanwhile, Dustin Poirier may not have to consider Paddy Pimblett as an option anymore. Why? Well, a fellow UFC fighter has recently claimed that the former interim champion may have found his last opponent. Here’s what he had to say.

Lightweight fighter reveals potential rematch in plans for Dustin Poirier
There’s no doubt that Dustin Poirier will have to go back to the drawing board to make his way into the lightweight title scene once again, so that’s out of the question. But one title he could win is the BMF championship, currently held by former featherweight champion Max Holloway. And it seems like that’s the fight Dana White and Co. may be planning for Poirier’s retirement fight as per Beneil Dariush, who made this revelation during a recent interview.
“My understanding is Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway are gonna fight. That’s what I’m hearing,” Beneil Dariush stated on the Submission Radio podcast. “I don’t know if it’s 100% sealed and done, but that’s what I’m hearing.” If this is the fight that Dana White is going to go for, it’s guaranteed action, and guess what? ‘Blessed’ might just take his revenge for losing against Dustin Poirier in their initial two encounters at UFC 143 and UFC 236 respectively.
