“My Heart Rate Dropped” – Joanne Calderwood Says She Fainted Immediately After Her UFC Fight

Joanne Calderwood was supposed to fight Valentina Shevchenko for the flyweight belt in 2020. However, owing to an injury, Shevchenko pulled out. Hence, Calderwood decided to face Jennifer Maia instead of waiting on the sidelines.

Unfortunately, the Scottish fighter lost to Maia in the first round itself. However, her defeat was not the only massive setback as she fainted backstage.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Calderwood spoke about the incident. Speaking about things that led to the incident, Calderwood said, “At the end of the day for me, I didn’t feel right on the day. I felt sick and then, I got COVID on the Wednesday. So, I think there was a lot of aspects to that fight. You know, I took it short noticed, and I wasn’t wasn’t good on the day. Like I hadn’t ate.”

She further said, “And then after the fight, like I got rushed to the hospital and there was a lot of issues there. So, I feel like me looking back on that if things but you have to look as a fighter, you know. Every day is not going to be a good day. So, you have to prepare for those and kind of let that go like ‘okay, that wasn’t good’. Not can I dwell on it too much.” 

Speaking about getting rushed to the hospital, Calderwood said, “They had to put John in the front for they needed backup because my heart rate dropped. They called for backup.”

When is Joanne Calderwood fighting next?

Following that fight, she returned and beat Jessica Eye at UFC 257. Later, she lost to Lauren Murphy at UFC 263. Now, she is preparing for her upcoming fight against Taila Santos on November 20.

Both Calderwood and Santos are primarily strikers. While the former has a record of 15-6, the latter has a record of 18-1.
