Israel Adesanya, the former UFC middleweight champion, has found himself in numerous controversies outside the octagon. Adesanya recently lost his title to Sean Strickland, a significant upset that shocked the MMA community. Despite being a heavy favorite, ‘The Last Stylebender’ lost via unanimous decision in a remarkable performance by Strickland. Merely days later, a report by the New Zealand Herald on Sunday revealed that Adesanya pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges.

Michael Bisping, a former UFC middleweight champion and commentator has recently taken to YouTube to discuss the impact these incidents would have on Adesanya. Especially interesting is his take on how Sean Strickland might react to this public information. In his typical Bisping fashion, he added some humor and intriguing comments to the situation. Let’s dive in!

According to reports, Israel Adesanya pleaded guilty to a drunk driving charge for operating a vehicle in Auckland on August 19 with 87 milligrams of alcohol in his system per 100 milliliters of blood. Exceeding New Zealand’s legal limit of 50 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood. Michael Bisping expressed his sympathy for Israel Adesanya’s situation, wished him well, and hoped he had learned from it.

Nonetheless, Bisping seemingly defended Adesanya stating that the indications used to judge if the ex-champion was indeed drunk were not necessarily accurate. “It’s worth pointing out, 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood, you’re allowed to drive,” he went on. “What does that mean? That means you’re sober as a judge, otherwise, he wouldn’t allow you to drive a car. He wasn’t even double that, he was 87 over, and I am not making excuses for him.

He went on to add and clarify that he does not advocate for drunk driving, but Adesanya must not have been that drunk. “It’s awful. Drink driving is a terrible thing and lots of innocent people lose their lives every single day, but it’s worth just putting this into perspective. It’s 87 milligrams as opposed to 50, so he was probably still sober, but he just had alcohol in his system” he stated, followed by levying the impact on ‘The Last Stylebener’s’ UFC journey ahead.

Bisping speculated whether Adesanya would face Sean Strickland next, suggesting that Strickland might taunt Adesanya about the incident. He stated, “Sean’s gonna have a field day with this he’s gonna be like, ‘Man, I really got to you Izzy, okay, never mind all the messing with the dogs and stuff, you’re out there drunk driving.‘”

This isn’t the first time a UFC star has been involved in a DUI incident. Several other fighters have faced legal consequences for DUI charges in recent times.

Other UFC fighters who have faced DUI charges in the past

Pat Miletich, a former UFC champion and Hall of Famer, faced DUI arrests on three separate occasions. Darren Till, a one-time welterweight title contender in the UFC, found himself arrested in 2022 for DUI charges. A report from a Swedish news outlet, confirmed by MMA junkie, detailed his arrest on July 31st in Central Stockholm.

UFC legend BJ Penn faced legal trouble when authorities arrested him on suspicion of DUI in Honoka’a, Hawaii, but was later released pending an investigation. The arrest took place after Hawaii County Police Department officers responded to a reckless driving complaint. Unfortunately for Penn, someone recorded the incident on video, showing his aggressive conduct, which included using offensive language and racial slurs.
