Dustin Poirier is all set to challenge for the UFC lightweight title before the year ends. The fighter has been in great form recently and has won his last 3 fights comfortably. Now, as the fighter prepares for the title fight, he recently remembered the first time he fought for the title 2 years ago. Poirier had faced Khabib Nurmagomedov at the UFC 242 event and lost that fight via a 3rd round submission.

‘The Diamond’ recently took to Twitter and talked about that loss. He wrote, “2 years ago today I walked offstage after the press conference. I was heartbroken and unsure of my future. Today I’m preparing for the chance to wrap gold around my waist at the end of the year. Keep grinding and chase your dreams! Let them doubt.”

When Poirier faced ‘The Eagle’ back on September 7, 2019, he was riding high on a 7 fight unbeaten streak. Through that time, Poirier had faced and defeated fighters like Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, and Max Holloway. Therefore, many expected Poirier to be the one to defeat Nurmagomedov.

However, that could not happen and Poirier was heartbroken because of that. Now since then, Nurmagomedov has retired and Charles Oliveira has become the UFC champion. As Poirier took to Twitter and posted this emotional message about his loss to Nurmagomedov. ‘The Eagle’ was one of the few to reply to Poirier.

Nurmagomedov wrote, “One more step Dustin, Good Luck”. ‘The Eagle’ is one of the greatest UFC champions of all time and was the one who defeated Poirier 2 years ago. Therefore, motivation from Nurmagomedov would certainly mean a lot to Poirier.

What to expect from the fight between Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier?

Poirier will be facing Charles Oliveira for the UFC lightweight championship any time soon. Coming into this fight, Poirier is riding high on a 3 fight win streak, with 2 of them coming against Conor McGregor at the UFC 257 and UFC 264 event.
