UFC middleweight, Paulo Costa on the media day in the lead-up to his fight against Marvin Vettori announced that he will not make the weight. According to him, his weight right now is around 96 kilos (211 pounds). He won’t be able to cut it down to 185 pounds before the fight.
Vettori in the press conference said that he’s ready to fight at any weight and doesn’t want the fight to be scrapped. Both fighters in an interview after the media day verbally agreed to fight at 195 pounds. According to UFC officials, the promotion has decided to go ahead with the fight, but the decision on weight is yet to be taken.
Costa, however, will have to give up some percentage of his purse. The percentage is undisclosed. According to MMA reporter Aaron Bronsteter, “Am told that Paulo Costa will forfeit a yet to be disclosed percentage of his purse to Marvin Vettori for their bout being contested at a catchweight.”

‘Borrachinha’ missed the weight by 25 pounds, which will be a UFC record if the fight goes through. Rafael Alves holds the record for the biggest margin for a weight miss. He exceeded the weight limit by 11.5 pounds for his fight against Patrick Sabatini. That bout was eventually scrapped.
Consequences for missing weight
UFC, like all MMA organizations, takes the matter of missing weight seriously. If the bout takes place at catchweight, the fighter who misses the weight has to give up a percentage of his purse to his opponent. Generally, it is 20 percent, 30 percent in case the margin is bigger.
A lot of fighters in their careers have missed weight. And have had to give up a percentage of their purse. The latest one to go through this was Jared Gooden. For his welterweight bout against Randy Brown at UFC Fight Night 194, Gooden weighed 174 pounds. That was three pounds over the limit. He had to give up 20 percent of his purse to Brown.
