Sean O’Malley is one of the most popular fighters in the UFC and has an incredible MMA record. The fighter has been performing admirably since he joined the UFC and has a record of (5-1) since joining the company. However, ‘Sugar’ is still unranked, and he is quite okay with it, as according to him, rankings mean nothing.

Recently, O’Malley appeared on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani and talked about various things, including UFC rankings. ‘Sugar’ said, “It’s crazy to think that rankings just don’t really mean sh*t. I’ve never thought they really meant anything. Like if you’re ranked No.15 or 14 and you’re pumped about that, it’s just weird to me.”

“It’s like you’re not the fu*king champ, you’re not anything so. Yeah, it doesn’t really matter.” O’Malley clearly believes that whether a fighter is unranked, is ranked 15, or is ranked in the top 3, it does not matter unless you are the champion.

O’Malley himself is unranked as he has not competed against top-ranked UFC fighters. ‘Sugar’ had recently revealed a reason behind the same as well. O’Malley had talked about how he is contractually bound to fight a certain number of times for the promotion.

And whether he fights ranked fighters or unranked fighters, he will be paid the same amount of money. Therefore, ‘Sugar’ believes that fighting a ranked fighter for the same amount of remuneration is just isn’t worth the risk.

O’Malley himself talked about how he would look to compete at the UFC 269 event this December. While the opponent is yet unknown, many fans believe the UFC wants O’Malley to face No.8 ranked Frankie Edgar in his next fight.

Edgar is coming off a loss to Cory Sandhagen, and many believe he is the right opponent for ‘Sugar’. However, as O’Malley has expressed no desire to face ranked opponents, the fights seem unlikely to happen.
