Jorge Masvidal called Donald Trump “the greatest president in history” in his retirement speech earlier this year. This was just the latest chapter in the love affair between him and Donald Trump. The former BMF belt holder also campaigned for Trump in the 2020 presidential election to show support for the Republican. And the feelings, it seems, are mutual.

Talking to comedian Jim Norton and former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra on the UFC Unfiltered show, Donald Trump talked about Jorge Masvidal, praising the Cuban-American and sharing his favorite memory of the fighter.

Trump frankly admitted that he likes people who like him, and the reason he likes ‘Gamebred’ is because he is a Trump supporter. “Yeah, well, Jorge Masvidal, you know why I love him? I love people that like me. He likes me, and you know, he’s a guy from Cuba, yeah, who got left alone in life at like nine years old, and, you know, really went through a lot.”

Trump revealed his favorite memory of ‘Gamebred’ was his flying-knee knockout of Ben Askren in the opening seconds of their fight in 2019. “And he had the quickest knockout. And I remember Dana saying the young man that he’s fighting is really good; he’s really good, but he got knocked out in like three seconds or so, Ben Askren (did),” Trump told the hosts. “He had done some good stuff, you know… I don’t know if he’s retired or not, but he had a hell of a career,” he said.

He credited Masvidal’s vociferous support and campaigning for helping him win Florida in the 2016 and 2020 Presidential elections and the strong showing he had among Hispanic there. “He was a big fan of mine politically, and I’ll tell you it made a difference. I did phenomenally well in Miami and in all of Florida with the Hispanic population, and I credit a lot of that to Jorge. So we love Jorge, and he’s a tough cookie,” Trump said.

Other UFC figures, such as Dana White and Colby Covington, are also die-hard Trump fans. White appreciates Trump supporting the UFC when it was a marginal promotion, far from the mainstream and looked upon as savage and uncouth. This raises the question: why does Masvidal support Trump?

Jorge Masvidal’s reasoning for supporting Donald Trump

Jorge Masvidal came to the United States from Cuba when he was just fifteen. He made a makeshift raft and crossed the Gulf of Mexico, leaving his family behind. Masvidal has said that he supports Trump because Trump “stands for freedom everywhere”. Masvidal is highly critical of the policies of Communist and Socialist countries like Cuba, as he feels they are exploitative of the people there.
