Ronda Rousey is one of the most famous female MMA athletes on the planet. The Olympic bronze medalist in Judo in 2008 took the MMA world by storm with her incredible grappling skills. She originally debuted in Strikeforce, the now-defunct promotion, in 2011. And with the UFC later absorbing the promotion, Rousey gained notoriety for her incredible armbar submissions, a majority of which came in the very first round of her fights!

Recently, in the UFC Ultimate 30 All-Time Roster episode, Rousey’s impact on the sport was highlighted. A former UFC women’s bantamweight champion revealed the details behind Rousey’s early days in the UFC. Despite her incredible skills, the comments indicate that the judoka-turned-MMA fighter tended to rub people the wrong way!

Ronda Rousey was the first female MMA athlete who projected an aura of invincibility. She finished 6 of her first UFC fights with either a submission or a KO/TKO. The Olympian was head and shoulders above the competition when it came to grappling skills and was also a hard hitter on the feet when she managed to connect.

But despite her in-cage accomplishments, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate revealed that Rousey didn’t mesh well with other female fighters on the roster. Tate expressed uncertainty about Rousey’s influence initially but noted her distinct style and presence. She remarked, “She’s like I don’t need nobody. I got me, and you know, and that was kind of the chip on her shoulder. So she was very rude for the most part”

Tate also found Rousey’s self-reliance off-putting, as she didn’t align with the collaborative efforts of other female fighters. Rousey’s attitude, marked by a strong sense of independence, left an impression that Miesha perceived as rudeness.

Rousey has since moved on from the UFC to a career in the world of professional wrestling. But her impact on the world of women’s MMA cannot be understated. Another pioneer of women’s MMA has recently come out to show her support for Rousey’s incredible career!

Rousey is considered ‘unappreciated’ by WWE star and former MMA fighter

Shayna Baszler secured a win over Ronda Rousey at WWE SummerSlam 2023 in an MMA Rules match. Baszler won the match via a chokehold that Rousey could not escape. Baszler who transitioned to professional wrestling in 2017 had also competed in MMA for promotions like Invicta FC and the UFC in the past. And she recently spoke out to show her support for Ronda Rousey.

She stated, “I think Ronda Rousey is, I think she’s under-appreciated. I think people like to hate her for whatever reason, and it’s been that way in MMA — it’s because she doesn’t mince her words.”

The comments underscore the observations shared by Miesha Tate that Rousey had a tendency to give the wrong impression to people. Nevertheless, ‘Rowdy’ still remains one of the most enigmatic and dominant mixed martial artists to ever step foot into the Octagon!
