Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov were unparalleled lightweights. Ferguson was an Interim Champion, and Khabib successfully defended his belt twice. During this fight’s announcement and press conference, one might really doubt that Russian will favor Ferguson. But the truth is something else.
According to Tsarukyan, it was Fergusson whom Russia considered better. “You know, I live in Russia… UFC is, I think, number one sport.”

Another reason fans thought Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov to be ‘The Match’ was because of the ground game of Ferguson. Khabib had mauled his opponents from his suffocating wrestling and top in class ground-and-pound. His wrestling would have tested against the American.
