Sean Brady is one of the hottest up-and-coming prospects in the UFC. His unexpected loss to Belal Muhammad last year handed him the lone blemish on his otherwise impressive 15-1 record. And he will be looking to bounce back from his first pro career loss in his upcoming bout.

The American will face Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night Austin on December 2 in a welterweight bout. This bout will mark Gastelum’s return to the 170 lbs division. Gastelum had made his UFC debut at welterweight but moved up to middleweight for his next fight, where he has been since then. And ahead of their much-awaited bout, let us take a look at the only loss in Brady’s career.

Sean Brady and Belal Muhammad fought in a welterweight bout at UFC 280 last year. The Palestinian managed to stop Brady in the second and won the fight via TKO, which has been a bitter pill for the Philadelphian to swallow. However, the 31-year-old was undaunted after the loss, saying that he defeated himself mentally in that bout.

He also admitted to feeling a sense of relief at the pressure of being undefeated being lifted from his shoulders after losing to Muhammad. “The world’s not going to end when you lose, you know? I had this thing in my mind that the world was going to be over if I lost my undefeated record,” Brady told ‘MMA Junkie’.

The Pennsylvania native said that he had accepted the fact that losing is a part of life when fighting the best fighters in the world. Brady felt that it was a lack of belief in himself that led to the first loss of his career. “It’s not that serious. Yeah, fighting is a huge part of my life, but anybody can lose when you’re fighting the best guys in the world, especially. I just got to believe in myself more,” he added.

Brady has a significant challenge on his hands in the form of Gastelum, who will be eager to make a mark on the division after a patchy run at middleweight in recent times. And Brady, who took his first loss like a champ, has promised to never repeat the mistakes he made in the Muhammad fight.

“I kind of didn’t believe in all my skills that night. I kind of had a little mental lapse, but that will never happen again. I’ve learned more from that loss than I did all of my wins. So, it was very good for me. I’m honestly happy it happened,” he added.

Hi, I am Kanishk and I am a UFC Writer at EssentiallySports. I love telling the stories of these magnificent fighters and this wildly unpredictable sport that is so frustrating and yet so joyous at the same time. I never really used to watch MMA, thinking it too crude or brutal a sport to deserve respect.
