Former featherweight champion Max Holloway called out newly-minted featherweight champion Ilia Topuria after his UFC 300 clash last night. While Topuria had confirmed that he would face ‘Blessed’ next, their back-and-forth has moved to social media as Holloway responded to the Spaniard’s Twitter call-out in kind.

Topuria took to Twitter, expressing respect for the Hawaiian, and congratulated on his UFC 300 Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night winning heroics against Justin Gaethje. And then promised he would be the first to knockout Holloway when they met in the octagon. The  145-pound champion went biblical and cited Phillippians 4:13, which talks about getting the strength to do anything from Christ.

“Congrats on your performance Max . Respect your story and everything you achieved with a beautiful family . Hopefully we gonna share the octagon before the end of the year and trust me you gonna feel something that you never felt before . I will be the first one to take your lights out. Philippians 4:13,” ‘El Matador’ tweeted.

Holloway responded soon after and cited his own bible verse, Jeremiah 51:20, implying he was the ‘battle-axe of the lord.’ “It’s all love champ. I’ll be seeing you soon. Jeremiah 51:20,” Holloway responded.

What made Max Holloway’s victory so special was the fact that the former champion moved up a weight class to face perhaps the most dangerous striker at 155 in Gaethje, and put in an almost perfect performance. He, of course, won the BMF title, two $300k bonuses, and the eternal respect of all UFC fans. Topuria, however, was not impressed by ‘Blessed’s UFC 300 performance.

‘El Matador’ trashes Holloway for UFC 300 performance

While he did congratulated Max Holloway following UFC 300, Ilia Topuria gave his thoughts on Holloway’s UFC 300 victory. “I saw nothing special, to be honest with you,” Topuria said. He felt that Holloway-Gaethje was essentially “a game of exchanging blows without any strategy behind it, [and] without any defense, that can happen.”

And while ‘Blessed’ may have managed to win against Gaethje using this faulty approach, he warned the Hawaiian “that would never happen with me,” reminding him that he beat Alexander Volkanovski, whom ‘Blessed’ has lost to thrice, with relative ease earlier this year.

“The results are, of course, what [Max Holloway] couldn’t do in 90 minutes [against Alexander Volkanovski], I did it in nine,” Topuria added in Spanish. As always, Topuria is confident and cock-sure of victory. But, Holloway, as he has proven time and again, has a knack for springing surprises on his opponents and is not one to be underestimated. Who do you think will win in their bout?
