Not a lot of fighters can put on a dominant performance, day after day. To be able to do that, for years on end and to not have suffered a single defeat is an entirely different ballgame, altogether. Fighters like Jon Jones and Khabib Nurmagomedov are not like the others. These are the two names in UFC that have done the unthinkable.

Now, as fight fans, the fantasy fight between two of the greatest MMA fighters is what is left to be seen. Since the two fought weight classes apart, the fight was never feasible. However, the GOAT debate, it seems, has been settled and the fans have picked Jon Jones – and for a very good reason.

Both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Jon Jones are candidates worthy of the GOAT title. However, it seems that Jon Jones has accomplished something that few fighters can only hope to come close to achieving. Besides having a clean record with no losses (only one loss to a DQ for questionable elbow strikes), Jones has tussled with some of the fiercest and most decorated fighters – and still remains unscathed to the day.

After spending a lot of time away from the UFC, Jones came back, looking for Francis Ngannou, found Ciryl Gane instead, defeated him effortlessly, and once again, became the UFC champ – but this time the HW champ. It all seems too easy for him. To add to that, ESPN MMA shared a picture on Twitter from back in 2011, that featured UFC champs from the different UFC divisions sitting together.

Fighters like Anderson Silva and GSP were seen sitting beside Jones, who was at that time, the light heavyweight champ. In contrast to that, the picture below was a 2023 picture of Jones with the UFC HW title. The caption read: “12 years later and Jon Jones is the last male champ standing from that class“.

The picture was re-shared by bantamweight fighter Chito Vera, who took a dig at Nurmagomedov and claimed Jon Jones to be the true UFC GOAT. “And some of u idiots call kabib the goat lol“, he wrote.

Both Jon Jones and Khabib Nurmagomedov have done what no other UFC fighters have been able to do. When Khabib Nurmagomedov entered the UFC Octagon, he dominated the lightweight division. He fought the likes of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, Michael Johnson, Edson Barboza, and more and defeated all of them. When he retired after his father’s death, Nurmagomedov’s professional MMA record stood at 29-0-0. If Khabib Nurmagomedov had continued fighting at the UFC, maybe he would have extended that record. But at the end of the day, he didn’t.

On the other hand, Jon Jones has been rocking multiple championship belts since he joined the UFC. He earned the title of the youngest UFC champion ever when he defeated Maurício Rua at the age of 23. Some of the biggest names that he vanquished include Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson, Chael Sonnen, Lyoto Machida, Matt Hamill, Dominick Reyes, Ciryl Gane, and many more. Nearly all of these fighters were some of the best fighters in the division and had been champions at some point. Jones is currently the UFC HW champ as well.

A lot of the fighters that Nurmagomedov has fought are not big names. Taking all of that into perspective, there is no denying, that Jon Jones might have a bit of a lead when it comes to winning the UFC GOAT race. In fact, even Jon Jones himself seems to be of the same opinion and he has a valid reason for thinking so.
