UFC middleweight Derek Brunson took to social media and called out Paulo Costa, who most recently fought the undisputed champion. The Brazilian fighter made it known that he was keen to fight Robert Whittaker after the latter won at UFC 254. ‘The Reaper’ is now on his way to get his rematch against champion Israel Adesanya and possibly avenge his loss.

Brunson, who watched Costa’s call-out of Whittaker unfold, was quick to enter the conversation. Chiefly, Brunson said that Costa wouldn’t get a chance to face Whittaker as he was now next in line for a title. Paulo ‘The Eraser’ is fresh off a loss to Adesanya and was comprehensively beaten in that fight. He’s not in line to contest for a championship off the back of his immediate performance.

The aforementioned fight makes sense for more reasons than one. Brunson is fresh off a huge win over top prospect Edmen Shahbazyan in his recent outing. The middleweight veteran earned a third-round TKO after dismantling Edmen in the main event back in August. Not to mention, he’s on a three-fight winning streak and has looked exceedingly impressive in his new avatar.

As mentioned earlier, Paulo Costa lost his undefeated status when he fell at the hands of ‘The Last Stylebender’ at UFC 253. Costa was no match for the undisputed king, who picked him apart from the outside and viciously stopped him. However, Paulo is a hugely popular fighter who holds wins over Yoel Romero, Johny Hendricks, and Uriah Hall.

His ascent in the UFC was a fast one, and he’s now looking to fast-track himself back into contention. However, given his recent performance, the UFC isn’t going to be keen to place him into title contention. A win over Derek Brunson would be the right move to facilitate his return to the top.
However, beating Derek Brunson will be easier said than done. The collegiate wrestler has greatly improved striking, and his fight IQ has been rapidly evolving his game. Additionally, when fighting out of a southpaw stance, he can pose huge problems for Costa’s aggressive and pressuring style.
