Even though Thompson had an impressive career in UFC, he has never won a gold strap under his name. Following his win over Geoff Neal, we will see the ‘Wonderboy’ back in action at UFC 264. This is surely a big opportunity for Thompson as a win can cement his position in the welterweight gold race.

The 38-year-old has fought twice for the welterweight gold against Tyron Woodley. However, he couldn’t win the belt as his first title bout against Woodley ended in a draw and he lost the second fight via majority decision.
The American native is currently on a two-win streak and stands at the #4 position in the welterweight roster. He will soon fight Gilbert Burns in the UFC 264 event which is headlined by Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier.

Meanwhile, Burns is coming off a loss against Kamaru Usman in a title shot at UFC 258. The Brazilian striker has strong knockout power in his gloves and will surely give a hard time to Thompson inside the cage. The (16-4) holder will surely have to stop the Brazilian fighter for a possible title shot.

However, Colby Covington is next in the line for the welterweight gold per the UFC president Dana White. Furthermore, Leon Edwards is also relevant in the picture after his exceptional win over Nate Diaz at UFC 263. All in all, a win over Burns might not give Thompson a title shot next but it will surely increase his chances in the title race.
