Following an old backstage brawl between Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards in 2019, the promotion was about to set up a fight for both the men. However, the Brit backed off, showing disinterest in fighting Masvidal, and aimed for the title instead. ‘Gamebred’ didn’t take this well and lashed out at ‘Rocky’ for canceling a fight with him. However, Stephen Thompson threw his name into the hat.

‘Wonderboy’ and ‘Gamebred’ have once clashed inside the octagon at UFC 217. Thompson won the fight via a unanimous decision. However, as he believes that ‘Gamebred’ is a completely different fighter now, he would love to square off with him once again.

Stephen Thompson vs Jorge Masvidal 2 -Will It Happen?
The 16-5 record holder, Stephen Thompson, lost his two-fight win streak when he was defeated by the Brazilian fighter Gilbert Burns at UFC 264. Following the defeat, ‘Wonderboy’ dropped to #5 in the welterweight roster.
Meanwhile, Masvidal, who lost both his welterweight title fights against Kamaru Usman, hasn’t entered the octagon since his defeats. However, he recently hinted at a comeback and is waiting for a viable opponent who can fast-track his welterweight gold journey.

As Masvidal is currently #6 in the welterweight division, the third-ranked Edwards may not have seen any benefits in this fight. However, a square-off between ‘Gamebred’ and ‘Wonderboy’ makes sense, as they are sixth and fifth respectively, and have lost their last fights.

As an added incentive, Masvidal can look to avenge his previous loss and cement his position in the welterweight title race by defeating Thompson. Hence, as both the fighters are interested, it is all in the hands of the matchmakers.
