In the world of combat sports, entertainment is as vital as competition, as it captivates fans and drives financial success. A good fight needs a storyline, compelling characters, and an electrifying climax in the fight. The best fighters, in addition to their prowess, are entertainers in their own right. Owing to his entertaining persona, it is not a coincidence that Conor McGregor is the most popular and wealthiest MMA fighter of all time.

One important part of building a fighter’s persona is their nickname, as it encapsulates what the fighter wants to be perceived as. And one of the most distinct and memorable nicknames in the sport is ‘Baby Shark’, given to UFC #10 ranked women’s strawweight and heartthrob Tabatha Ricci. But how did she get her moniker? Let’s dig deeper to find out!

In an interview with Cageside Press, the Brazilian shared the story behind her distinctive nickname. Ricci said that she was the smallest girl among her peers in her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym, but she exclusively trained with boys. Her coach was impressed and gave her the nickname ‘Baby Shark’ owing to her small frame and fierceness.

Ricci is gearing up to take on Loopy Godinez in a women’s strawweight fixture at UFC 295. The winner of this bout is expected to secure a rank in the top ten of the division. Leading up to the bout, Ricci spoke about her respect for Godinez because of her work ethic and talent. The Brazilian felt it was a good matchup and was excited to take her on.

I love telling the stories of these magnificent fighters and this wildly unpredictable sport that is so frustrating and yet so joyous at the same time. I never really used to watch MMA, thinking it too crude or brutal a sport to deserve respect.
