Cody Garbrandt is a well-known name in the UFC. Fans know him for his exceptional knockout prowess inside the Octagon. Garbrandt is also a former UFC Bantamweight Champion. However, he has been on a downfall for the last few years. His record for the last 6 of his fights stands at a miserable 5-1. Garbrandt‘s 6 fight win streak was compromised when he faced T.J. ‘Lieutenant Dan’ Dillashaw at UFC 217 on November 4, 2017.

Right from the beginning of his career, Garbrandt‘s weak ground game had subjected him to a lot of trouble. But, ‘the American’ finally decided to work on his ground game to get better and chose the UFC 282 headliner, Magomed Ankalaev, to help him. Recently, he was reported to be flying to Dagestan along with Ankalaev‘s coach, Sukhrab Magomedov.

Garbrandt said that he was not allowed to pay for his own coffee by Ankalaev, who informed him that they were heading to Dubai and then Dagestan.

Garbrandt plans on regaining glory with a superior ground game atop exceptional striking

Despite having quite good wrestling abilities, ‘No Love’ relied heavily on his punching prowess to finish opponents. After winning two straight bouts against his former teammate, T.J. Dillashaw appeared as an online guest on Brendan Schaub’s podcast and stated, “He’s a pretty freak athlete. He’s fast. He’s the fastest guy I’ve ever sparred or fought”.

But Dillashaw also pointed out the flaws in his overall style saying, “Change up who you are as a fighter, and he’s just not willing to do that. He’s gonna keep his head in the same spot, his hands are gonna be low, and he’s gonna throw hard fast hooks. So after everyone sees where his weaknesses are at”.

‘Lieutenant Dan’, being a former teammate of ‘No Love’, knew a lot about his game. Finally, it seems that Garbrandt has listened to his advice and left for the ‘backyard of combat Sambo’ to return as a more lethal fighter.

My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
