At the press conference, a reporter asked Dana White about a fan’s intriguing fight card idea. The proposal involved a main event featuring Alexander Volkanovski vs. Ilia Topuria with Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili as the co-main event, aiming to potentially crown two Georgian champions if they both win their matchups.

The bout against Yair Rodriguez was anticipated as a stern test for Volkanovski, facing a youthful and ambitious contender. However, the champion displayed his caliber when he triumphed in the third round, catching Rodriguez with a right hook and finishing him with ground strikes. This fight followed his unsuccessful attempt to secure a second belt in the lightweight division, where he fell short against Islam Makhachev.

During an interview backstage at UFC 293, Volkanovski expressed his desire to stay active, remarking, “You got the Ilia fight that’s always going to be there. You got that rematch that I want (vs. Makhachev). I want to be active. Obviously, Islam and Charles (Oliveira) are going at it soon, so I don’t want to be waiting around. So, I’ll do early next year, I think.” While expressing his willingness to fight early next year, he acknowledged the packed schedule due to several champions needing bouts and regretted not securing a fight in the current year.
