In the electrifying world of MMA, the role of the referee is as crucial as the fighters themselves. Responsible for ensuring the safety and integrity of the bouts, a referee’s decisions can significantly impact the outcomes of fights. The line between victory and potential injury is often dictated by split-second judgments, making the referee’s job one of immense responsibility.

Further, small errors in judgment from referees can lead to severe injuries or even life-altering consequences for fighters. A recent incident at the Georgian Fighting Championship’s GFC 23 event underscored the importance of accurate refereeing. In a lightweight contest between Khamid Azimov and Morteza Rashvandi, a crucial moment unfolded that sent shockwaves through the MMA community.

Referee does not stop a fight despite fighter going unconscious at GFC 23

During the first round, Azimov applied a triangle choke on Rashvandi. Initially, the choke didn’t seem to be fully locked in, but as time passed, Azimov secured it tightly. Rashvandi, caught in the submission, didn’t tap out but went unconscious. Astonishingly, the referee failed to recognize Rashvandi’s unconscious state and allowed the fight to continue.

Commentators watching the event expressed their disbelief at the referee’s decision-making. “This is a tight triangle choke position, I think we are going to see a tap here. Is he going out? I think he might be out. He could be out,” said one of the commentators.

“He is out, he is gone, the referee needs to stop it. Referee, stop it! Wow that’s ridiculous. That was absolutely ridiculous refereeing. You spotted it before he even went limp, then he went limp, and the referee was still carrying on,” another commentator added.

Several seconds later, Azimov demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship and concern for his opponent’s well-being. Sensing that Rashvandi was unconscious, Azimov released the triangle choke, effectively ending the fight himself. It was only at this juncture that the referee recognized Rashvandi’s unconsciousness and awarded Azimov the victory.

A similar late stoppage at the UFC!

A similar incident took place inside the UFC octagon a few years ago. At UFC 263, Jamahal Hill faced Paul Craig in the first fight of the maincard. In the fight, Craig caught Hill in an armbar in the first round itself. Further, it looked like the armbar caused a fracture of Hill’s elbow. However, the referee did not notice it, and continued the fight with Craig going for a triangle choke.

Soon, the referee stopped the fight, but at that moment, the former UFC champ’s armed looked to have taken heavy damage. However, fans later got to know that the injury was a dislocation, not a fracture.
