Mixed martial arts is a show business. At its core, it needs to be entertaining and have colorful personalities around whose conflict creates a compelling storyline can be weaved. In short, it needs to be a spectacle. And one important part of the spectacle is the walk-out, which sets the scene for the fight.

Fighters often use their walk-out music as a way to express their personality, mood, intentions, and as a way to hype up the crowd. And ahead of UFC 296, the promotion’s last pay-per-view card of 2023 in Las Vegas, let us take a look at the fighters’ walk-out music.

Colby Covington (‘Medal’ by Jim Johnston)

Over his last few fights, Colby Covington has walked out to the song ‘Medal’ originally composed by Jim Johnston, which is the iconic entrance music of WWE megastar Kurt Angle. The song perfectly encapsulates Covington’s villainous,  deliberately rude and outspoken character as the music is accompanied with the audience audience chanting “You s**k”.

Leon Edwards (‘Shabba Madda Pot’ by Dexta Daps)

Welterweight champion Leon Edwards, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica, walks out to the song ‘Shabba Madda Pot’ by his friend the Caribbean artist Dexta Daps. Earlier, the Englishman used to walk out to song ‘Grinding All My Life’ by Nipsey Hussle that better encapsulates the essence of the 32-year-old who grew up in poverty.

Tony Ferguson (‘The Party Has Just Begun’ by Freestyle)

Former UFC interim champion Tony Ferguson walks out to Freestyle’s hit pop song ‘The Party Has Just Begun’. ‘El Cucuy’ has said that the song was the soundtrack to many  a barbecues at his home when he was a child.

Paddy Pimblett (‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond)

Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett hails from Liverpool, England, where his walkout song ‘Sweet Caroline’ by the legendary Neil Diamond is a popular song among soccer fans. It is often chanted by fans in soccer games in the island nation.

Cody Garbrandt (‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC)

For his last UFC appearance at UFC 285 last year, Cody Garbrandt walked out to rock-n-roll anthem ‘Thunderstruck’ by the OGs of rock-n-roll, AC/DC. As expected the song gets a great reaction from the fans and electrifies the atmosphere of the arena.

Stephen Thompson (‘Wonderboy’ by Tenacious D)

No discussion about Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thomspon can begin without acknowledging he is the nicest guy in the UFC. With that out of the way, the 40-year-old keeps his walk-out music simple using Tenacious D‘s 2001 rock hit ‘Wonderboy’.

Shavkat Rakhmonov (‘Kazakhstan National Anthem’ by Mukan Tulebayev)

Shavkat ‘Wanderer’ Rakhmanov is a proud Kazakhstani. The undefeated welterweight has spoken proudly about his warrior ancestry and his love for his native land. It is no surprise then that he walks out to the Kazakhstani national anthem.

Brandon Royval (‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’ by Ol’ Dirty Bastard)

Brandon Royval’s chosen walk-out music is the 1995 hip-hop banger ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’ by the 90’s rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The American has used the same song since his mixed martial arts debut in 2020.

Alexandre Pantoja (‘Many Men’ by 50 Cent)

Flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja has had a hard life, growing up in poverty in a single-parent household. And his walk-out music is a testament to the tough life he has led, The fighter walks out to rapper 50 Cent’s ‘Many Men’ from his iconic 2003 album Get Rich or Die Tryin’.

Josh Emmett (‘Sky’s the Limit’ by Rebelution)

UFC featherweight Josh Emmett walks out to the song ‘Sky’s the Limit’ by the Reggae rock band Rebelution. this song has been a fixture of his walk-outs for the past few years and is likely to be the song he walks-out to at UFC 296.
