Colby Covington is holding nothing back against Leon Edwards in the build-up to their clash at UFC 296. The former interim welterweight champion recently claimed that Edwards is a “cheater” and also took shots at his intelligence. Covington has been out of competition since his win against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 and is looking to secure the undisputed welterweight title in his return.

The two men have gone back and forth with Edwards calling Covington a “clown” and stating that he is in for a rude awakening when he steps into the Octagon. However, ‘Chaos’ is determined to claim the belt that has eluded him twice. Let’s take a look at what Covington had to say about his opponent who he has dubbed ‘Leon Scott’!

In a recent interview with All Out Fighting on YouTube, Covington was asked to share his thoughts and opinions on Leon Edwards as a fighter and as a person. And in trademark ‘Chaos’ fashion, he revealed his brutally honest opinion on ‘Rocky’.

He stated, “As a person, I just think that guy is just a waste of f**king chromosomes and a waste of space.” Covington also called for journalists to investigate Edwards’ IQ and educational background, stating, “Please, dive into Leon Scott’s IQ. Like what’s his level of education, did he graduate middle school, did he even get through elementary school, because the guy’s dumber than a box of rocks.”

Additionally, Covington accused Edwards of being the sport’s biggest cheater, surpassing even Kamaru Usman in unsportsmanlike conduct. According to Covington, “And as a fighter, Leon Scott is the biggest cheater the sport’s ever known. I thought Marty Usman was the cheater man, this guy makes Marty look like a freaking saint… I mean the guy’s the biggest cheater the sport has ever seen.”

He accused Edwards of various cheating tactics, including eye-poking, groin-kicking, and fence-grabbing. For Covington, preparing for Edwards involved strategizing to counter these alleged cheating methods. However, in a recent statement to UFC Europe, champion Leon Edwards believes that Covington’s trash talk will not help him inside the Octagon!

Covington’s trash talk does not faze Edwards

Leon Edwards is gearing up for his second UFC welterweight title defense, looking to build on his majority decision victory over Kamaru Usman in their trilogy bout at UFC 286. Covington’s third attempt at undisputed gold comes after previous losses to Usman, leaving him 2-2 in his last four fights.

Edwards believes this is Covington’s final shot at a UFC championship and acknowledged the stakes for both fighters. Covington’s outspoken nature and trash talk before fights have defined him, but Edwards views him as a character, referring to him as a “clown.”

‘Rocky’ stated, “He’s always playing a character and some of the s*** he’s coming out and saying just doesn’t make sense to me… I think that guy is a clown. But I am focused on going out there, taking him out, defending my belt for a second time, just carrying on my journey.”

Despite Covington’s reputation for outspokenness and pre-fight theatrics, Edwards perceives him as just a “character”. Focused on defending his belt and continuing his journey, Edwards aims to “take him out” and solidify his status as the welterweight champion.
