Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s cousin Usman recently received a suspension for failing a drug test. He will be out of action for six months and has to pay a 50,000 dollar fine. The banned substance, he later mentioned, was from a prescribed medication he failed to disclose. Incidentally, this was not the only instance where a fighter from Dagestan got banned for doping. This led to Conor McGregor sounding off on the Dagestani fighters for alleged steroid use.

Ruslan Magomedov fought in the UFC’s heavyweight division three times. He hailed from the same region of Dagestan as UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, he found himself getting banned for life by USADA after three doping violations. As such, Khabib’s former rival Conor McGregor did not shy away from taking shots at the Khabib camp over the Usman Nurmagomedov news.

After Ruslan Magomedov’s ban in 2019, ‘The Notorious’ shared a tweet with a picture of the 36-year-old standing side by side with Khabib Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov. There, Conor McGregor stated he was surprised to see yet another Dagestani fighter failing a drug test due to steroid usage.

“Wow another dagestani caught abusing steroids,” said Conor McGregor. He also pointed out Zubaira Tukhugov getting caught using banned substances, while also mentioning Magomedov’s lifetime ban. Moreover, the fact that he included Khabib Nurmagomedov in the picture in his tweet, McGregor implied that ‘The Eagle’ may have been lucky in not getting caught for his use of banned substances.

“That’s 2 out of 3 in this picture busted for steroid abuse, with the most recent being busted 3 times in a row and now hit with a lifetime ban,” said the former double champion. Then he turned his attention to the senior vice president, Jeff Novitzky. McGregor expressed how surprised he was that he did not see the doping violations coming.

Conor McGregor ended the tweet by taking shots at Nurmagomedov. “Excellent job [Jeff Novtizsky]. The only vice that cannot be forgiven is hypocrisy,” the former double champion added. Meanwhile, with Usman Nurmagomedov being one of the recent Dagestani fighters to have failed a drug test, what does the future look like for him in Bellator? Let’s have a look at that front.

Usman Nurmagomedov is still the lightweight champion

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s cousin mentioned that his drug test failure happened because of a banned substance found in his prescribed medication. He submitted all the necessary documents to prove that fact, which saw him getting a reduced suspension. However, Usman was supposed to compete in the Bellator Lightweight Grand Prix before failing the drug test. He has been removed from the competition but still holds the divisional championship.

Bellator 300 fight saw Usman Nurmagomedov defeat Brent Primus via unanimous decision. But after the recent doping violation, that fight was turned into a no-contest. Now, according to veteran MMA referee John McCarthy, Bellator will set up a rematch and run that title fight back. This, of course, will take place after the champion’s suspension period ends.

Usman Nurmagomedov’s recent suspension is not a good look for the Dagestani fighters. Nevertheless, the amount of drug test failures from Khabib’s team is surprising, to say the least. It remains to be seen how this recent violation will affect the 25-year-old undefeated fighter in the future. Till then, we will have to wait for any further developments in this regard.
