Jorge Masvidal remembers Colby Covington running away after he beat him up. The UFC’s first BMF champion, who announced his retirement in April last year at UFC 287, has been one of the most beloved stars of the promotion in the recent past. Part of his charms was his no-nonsense persona of a ‘real’ guy who was always willing to fight, whether in the octagon or on the street. Colby Covington, who was Masvidal’s former teammate, fell out with ‘Gamebred’ who plays a brash, abrasive, and antagonistic heel character, in the heated run-up to their UFC 272 bout in 2022.

This led to a very real beef between the two men, culminating in a violent confrontation, which Masvidal recounted in detail.

Jorge Masvidal was surprised he was arrested after Covington’s altercation

Two weeks after being beaten by Colby Covington at their UFC 272 bout, Jorge Masvidal allegedly assaulted Colby Covington outside a steakhouse, which led to Covington chipping his tooth and claiming he sustained brain damage. Masvidal told VladTV, “It just so happens after he drops that video [threatening to kill Masvidal], allegedly, he runs into a motherf***er that looks like me and that motherf***er that looks like me tells him what’s up and beats his motherf***ing ass and that motherf***er gets in trouble and then they blame me, allegedly. So it’s just, like, weird to me like man we’re both pro fighters at the end of the day,” he said.

Masvidal argued that since they were both pro-fighters and had been going and forth publicly, the assault was not a “big deal,” which, he claimed, is how the courts saw it. “And I think that’s how the court saw it as well, like, these are two prof fighters, this guy just f***ing threatened his life… what’s the big deal? This is what these guys do for a living, nobody got seriously hurt besides this guy’s pride and ego and that’s it. He ran away, there’s a 911 call of him calling the cops having the SWAT Force come to his rescue because I beat the f***ing living sh** out of him, allegedly,” he added.

The 39-year-old seemed to particularly relish recounting how a scared Covington ran away and called the cops to protect him from Masvidal. While ‘Masvidal’ was very careful in how he described the incident, repeatedly using the word ‘allegedly’, he need not use it since he has officially admitted to assaulting him in court.

Masvidal avoided jail time for Colby Covington’s scuffle

After being arrested for allegedly assaulting Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal was charged with battery and criminal mischief since ‘Chaos’ decided to press charges on the Cuban-American. In addition, he was charged with additional two felony counts, which he ultimately avoided.

In the end, Jorge Masvidal pled guilty to the former charges and cut a plea deal with the prosecutor. For his crimes against Covington, the former welterweight title challenger was sentenced to time served and the court costs by a Miami court. The felony charges were dropped as part of the deal and the Cuban-American did not serve any additional prison time for the assault.
