Ben Askren is at the center of all attention these days. The former Olympian just lost his debut boxing match against Jake Paul, as the latter knocked Askren out in the first round itself.
This moment stood as one of the most embarrassing of Askren’s otherwise legendary career. The only other time something like this happened was when Masvidal knocked out ‘Funky’ in just 5 seconds. Recently, Askren was talking about which of these moments was more embarrassing for him.
“I would say they are equally embarrassing, the Masvidal fight obviously meant a lot more to me. I mean, this was a fight that had light significance in my life and the Masvidal fight had gigantic significance. Masvidal fight if I won that, I was going to fight for the UFC title, which was the only belt at that point that I hadn’t held.”

Before going into the fight against Paul, Askren was clear that him winning this fight would not affect his life in any way. However, he knows the Masvidal fight meant a lot more and could have helped him greatly in his career.
“Yeah, I mean, the Masvidal match meant a lot more to me, but just from an embarrassing standpoint, I think they are probably equally embarrassing.”

When Askren fought Masvidal, his professional MMA record was 19-0, ‘Funky’ was all set to compete for the title, and even a potential match with Nurmagomedov was on the cards. But all of this came crashing down after his 5-second loss to Masvidal. After that fight, Askren competed just once more in the UFC, and when he lost that fight, he retired.

Even though Askren talks about both losses being embarrassing, it is clear which loss mattered to him most. When he lost to ‘Gamebred’ Askren was a regular competitor in the UFC and was trying to win the title. While against Paul, he was just a retired fighter coming back for one more match.
Even though both the losses feel embarrassing to Askren, he has had a great combat sports career and has entertained fans for a long time.
