The UFC boss, Dana White’s new venture, the ‘Power Slap League’ failed to garner the expected response from the audiences in its first season. Despite accepting a lot of other combat sports wholeheartedly, a major section of combat sports fans went vocal against White’s $100M venture. Some fans objected to the brutality of this sport, while others criticized it for the notoriously low athlete payments compared to the high physical risk they took. It has been two and a half months since the final of the PSL. But as it seems, a large section of combat sports fans still hold their distaste for it.

A recent post on Twitter showcased the pre and post-slap fight condition of a PSL athlete. It may be agreed that the post-fight condition of the athlete was really disturbing. This post garnered numerous reactions from twitteratis. Also, a number of them took to the comments section and expressed their opinions.

Not a single comment on the post was in favor of Dana White’s PSL

The post was made from the Twitter handle of the noted MMA coverage house, ‘Bloody Elbow’. The disliking that a chunk of combat sports fans had for the PSL was quite apparent from the comments section of the post.

‘Bloody Elbow’ captioned their post, “Dana White’s Powerslap before and after damage”. But it might shock a lot of fans that there wasn’t even a single positive comment about the snaps or Dana White’s $100M venture.

Despite all of them being against PSL, each fan had their own way of expressing disgust. Some labeled the sport with deriding attributes, while others called for it to end.

Some comments mocking the sport read:

  • This “sport” is ridiculous and damaging.
  • Clearly the worst sport
  • Dumbest spectacle out there
  • I am a huge fight fan, Slap is beyond retarded

Despite boasting success on the internet, the American audience also vocalized against TBS who telecasted the PSL. Under pressure, TBS decided to withdraw from broadcasting the further seasons of PSL as well.

Other fans bashed the $100M venture by Dana White in different ways

Although the fans shared a common goal, i.e. bashing the PSL, they took different routes to achieve it, i.e. bashed it on different grounds. Some such comments read:

  • Why give this ANY oxygen at all?
  • They get like $2k for this. It’s sad
  • All the training paid off lmao

While there definitely are fans of this spectacle as well. But currently, it seems that they are hugely outnumbered by the haters of this so-called ‘sport’.

It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
