Success didn’t come to Leon Edwards overnight. The UFC welterweight champion has worked his fingers to the bone to reach his current position. For the success of any UFC fighter, the promotion also plays a huge role. Edwards has received great opportunities in the promotion because White was ready to make the necessary adjustments for him even during the deadly COVID-19 Pandemic. However, ‘ The American Gangster’ was disappointed with the British Fighter as he said no to the very first thing asked for the promotion. The UFC boss wanted ‘Rocky’ to fight against Colby Covington after his first title defense against Kamaru Usman. Nonetheless, Edwards was not ready to fight ‘Chaos’, as he believed him not to be a worthy opponent.

Chael Sonnen details the ungrateful attitude of Leon Edwards

In a video uploaded on Chael Sonnen’s YouTube channel, he said, “As soon as they believe they’re powerful enough they turn the gun on you… Just as an example scratched and clawed his way just to get the opportunity and we were there for him. We didn’t let anybody slide him. We did not like the pandemic, had a country that shut down an airport and left the number three guy in the world behind.”

Sonnen further mentioned the favors UFC did for Edwards to reach the welterweight title. He added, “We didn’t let the division move on, did we? No, no we looked after Leon. We got Leon that opportunity. That opportunity was opposite Nate Diaz. We got an opportunity, we pushed him right into a main event. Yes we did, yes we did, we did that. As soon as he got the belt very first thing we asked him to do, he said no to it. Wasn’t the second thing, the third thing, the fourth thing. As soon as he got that belt, said we’d like you to fight Colby Covington and he told us no.According to ‘The American Gangster’, Edwards was ungrateful towards Dana White as he was not ready to fight Covington.

"Like many, my journey into the beautiful game began by watching the mesmerizing Lionel Messi, as his impeccable vision on the pitch and role as a playmaker, meticulously calculating the path to goal always amazed me. This fascination with the finer details of soccer strategy naturally extended to my interest in content strategy. However, my zeal for being a soccer content analyst is not only because of Messi's magic, as I am a keen follower of the Becks as well. While in David Beckham, it was a special affinity for his mastery of crosses, passes, and set pieces, in Victoria Beckham, the fashion queen, I find inspiration in how she masterfully navigated the world of aesthetics and brand identity. This unique blend of admiration for both the tactical intricacies of soccer and the world of fashion and entertainment helps me to cover the game from angles that seamlessly balance sport and entertainment. Before joining EssentiallySports, I worked as a content analyst as well. A Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature from a premiere institute has helped me hone my writing skills and given me a unique perspective on the world of sports. Interestingly, besides soccer, I also extensively covered UFC, especially the Joe Rogan podcast. In my free time, I enjoy reading and keeping up with the latest developments in the world of sports.
