Kevin Lee getting cut off by the UFC was big news. While the fighter lost quite a lot of his UFC fights from 2018 onwards, he was a popular fighter in the lightweight division. Hence, his exit from the promotion was shocking for his fans.
Lee, of course, didn’t like the way he was dropped. According to the fighter, the UFC did not personally inform him about his departure. This rubbed him the wrong way. He felt disrespected and in a new interview with MMA Junkie, he reiterated this.
Here's my interview with Kevin Lee. We chatted about:
– His move to Florida, switch to Sanford MMA
– Decision to sign with Eagle FC
– The new 165-pound division

During the interview, Lee claimed that they cut him off in order to teach Francis Ngannou a lesson. It is no secret that ‘The Predator’ has been having pay-related disputes with the UFC. Further, Ngannou and Lee are both managed by the ‘Creative Artists Agency.’ Thus, according to Lee, the UFC cut him off to show the heavyweight that they weren’t afraid to drop fighters.
Lee said, “To say I was surprised, no, not really. I know the back, the back end and all the stuff that goes behind closed doors. And you know, they really showed me no respect towards the end, you know. I feel like I ate a lot of the flak for guys like Francis Ngannou in his situation with them.”
“They used me as kind of like a pawn and a scapegoat and really, I hope other fighters kind of see that that’s what they do to you, you know. The didn’t like the way the negotiations was handling with Francis. So they took it out on me to kind of show him a lesson. But I think in the end, we are gonna show that, you know, you can’t necessarily treat people like this and, there’s many other ways to make money and kind of outshine them.”
Kay Hansen to Fight Again at UFC 273
“We are going to beat them one way or the other,” he added.
Now, though, he has found his place in Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle FC. He has an upcoming bout against Diego Sanchez, who was also previously fighting for the UFC. So it looks like he has a bright future ahead at the promotion.
