Helio Gracie is considered the Godfather of BJJ. While talking about the greatness of Royce Gracie, Joe Rogan, and Snoop Dogg, during Rogan’s podcast, discussed the Gracie family.

Snoop was in awe of Helio and said, “I would’ve loved to see he and his father fight. The way his old man used to come out there with the sweatsuit on. You just knew he was the s*t like, if this my son, I wish a mo**erf*cker would. Watch out Royce, let me get this mo**thf*cker. That was so gangster to me.”

“Those moments I remember by UFC that stay in my brain and I was like, this is a brand that’s here forever. When you see that man come out with his father, then y’all start running down the tradition of what his father meant to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, how they are the family, that you’re going to learn about and know about sooner or later,” he added.

According to Rogan, no family comes close to the kind of impact that the Gracie family made. He said, “They’re the greatest family in the history of martial arts, and there’s not even a close second. They’re the greatest family. There’s no other family that’s had an impact like they have.”

The Gracie family

The legacy of the Gracie family started with Helio Gracie. Considered as the Godfather of BJJ, Helio, by watching his older brother train, learned Jiu-Jitsu. Unfortunately, because of a medical condition, he wasn’t allowed to train. He then, instead of using pure strength, started using specific body movements to submit his opponents. That became to be known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Royce Gracie, son of Helio, is probably the most famous member of the family. After his brother, Rorion, along with promoter Art Davie, started the Ultimate Fighting Championship, his family picked him to represent them in the tournament. He won UFC 1, UFC 2, and UFC 4, and made BJJ popular among the masses. Many consider him as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time.

Rickson Gracie, the older brother of Royce, is, according to many is the best Gracie. Snoop in Rogan’s podcast asked him if Royce was the best Gracie, to which he said, “No, his brother Rickson was. And everybody says it, he says it too. His brother Rickson is a legend. His Jiu-Jitsu was universally regarded as being the best.”

There are other family members as well who are just as successful. Rickson’s son, Kron Gracie, is currently signed with the UFC and is 5-1 in his MMA career.
