Coming off a decision loss to Robert Whittaker in April, Kelvin Gastelum is about to face Jared Cannonier in a five-round fight at UFC fight night, this Saturday.

Notorious for taking fights on short notice, this time, Kelvin Gastelum has had a solid nine weeks to prepare for this matchup and believes he is ready to get back to his winning ways.

Furthermore, the 29-year-old recently revealed he got to work with former double champion Henry Cejudo to prepare for his upcoming bout. Both Gastelum and Cejudo share the same manager and have been friends for a while. Gastelum couldn’t help but praise the former olympian and UFC champion for his insight and expertise, making the following statement.

” I went out and trained with Henry a couple of times, for a few weeks. And I got to pick his brain, you know. We get to spend a lot of time and hang out all the time, yeah. But times where we actually get to sit down and I get to pick his brain in the way that we did then, I don’t do it too many times; you know. I got to pick his brain; I got to learn from him and he got to show me how he structures his training, you know. This guy’s a winner, behind the Triple C facade, there’s a really intelligent competitor.”

Having lost four of his last five fights inside the octagon, Gastelum will hope to make a statement against the number three ranked Cannonier. One can imagine the reservoir of knowledge Triple C possesses considering his achievements in the ring, and Gastelum will hope that their training sessions together will pay off, come fight night.

Can Kelvin Gastelum make his way back to a title shot?

Despite his recent track record, Kelvin Gastelum is still one of the most lethal fighters in the middleweight division. Let’s not forget his performance against the reigning champion Israel Adesanya, who considers Gastelum to have been his toughest fight to date.

However, that doesn’t mean the California native hasn’t got room to expand his skill set. Gastelum majorly relies on his crisp boxing skills and wrestling prowess to outwork his opponents. And although that has worked plenty of times for him, he does run into problems with rangier opponents like Darren Till and Israel Adesanya.

Even in his upcoming matchup, Gastelum is about to face a taller and stronger opponent in Cannonier. Come fight night, should Gastelum get the win, he will most likely find himself back on the road to a title shot. Another loss would shift him further below in the rankings, further distancing him away from his dream of becoming a champion in the UFC.
