‘A friend in need is a friend indeed’. Many of us must have come across this saying in our lives to date. Some of us might also have experiences that prove the authenticity of this age-old saying in this real world. Recently, a similar instance of friendship was displayed by the noted former Strikeforce and UFC Welterweight, Jake Shields.

As a lot of MMA fans might know, Shields is one of the all-weather friends of the ‘Stockton Gangster’, Nate Diaz, who had never minded even getting into scuffles for his friend. Apparently, Shields was shaken by the recent news of an arrest warrant being issued against Diaz. The recent viral video of ‘Nick Diaz’s brother’ putting a Logan Paul lookalike to sleep is what led to an arrest warrant being issued against him. However, Shields recently posted a series of tweets defending his friend, Diaz, and implying that the Logan Paul lookalike named Rodney Petersen was the aggressor of the attack.

Jake Shields explained how Nate Diaz was actually in a defensive position

It was the issuance of the arrest warrant against Diaz that had Shields diving into the incident to defend his friend. He dug deep into the video and pointed out how Diaz was in a defensive stance throughout the entire video.

His first tweet of the series read, “After hearing New Orleans has issued an arrest warrant on Nate Diaz I called my team to carefully brake down the footage. Give this thread a look and give me your opinion of id this is self-defense”.

It was apparent that Shields wanted the MMA world to realize what actually had happened. His second tweet in the same thread contained the video of the brawl. However, in his third tweet, Sheilds revealed that Petersen was a professional fighter looking to make a name.

He captioned this tweet, “Here you can see he’s also a pro fighter looking for attention. He attacked Nate trying to make a name for himself”, along with a photo of Petersen’s Instagram account.

However, Shields felt a single thread of tweets won’t suffice to garner enough attention and spread what he saw as the truth. He posted another thread of tweet with the same series of information.

Jake Shields also broke down the video in the comments

Nate Diaz’s friend wanted to make every online effort to shield his bosom friend. Shields also took to the comments section of his first tweet regarding this issue and uploaded a few images, pointing out how anyone with the knowledge of jiu-jitsu could trace that Diaz was actually in a defensive position.

‘The American Jiu-Jitsu guy’ also posted a tweet in between all these where he confessed that he was biased towards his friend. But he also stated from his unbiased judgment that Diaz was truly in a defensive position. The tweet read, “I’m biased but this is clearly self-defense”.

Shields received quite some support in the comments section of his tweets. The sounds of “free Nate” had also been heard of late. However, right now it can’t be documented how effective Shield’s tweets will be regarding this arrest involving his friend, Diaz.

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
