Colby Covington and Ian Garry have been beefing for quite some time now. Perhaps it all began when Ian Garry’s personal life was put out in front of the world regarding his relationship with his wife, Layla Machado Garry. Now, Garry has one extra victory to his name and Covington on his mind for the next matchup.

But is this a good idea for Garry? Covington has been in the division for longer than ‘The Future’ who is a relatively newer edition to the UFC roster. Will the match be completely one-sided with a massive victory for one of them or would they go toe-to-toe? Here’s why Covington might just take the victory.

Stylistic differences may hinder Garry

Colby Covington is known for his cardio and Ian Garry isn’t much farther apart with putting the opponent under constant pressure. However, Covington is also impressive when it comes to wrestling and Ian Garry has had his fair share of trouble with clinches before.

Perhaps the striker from Ireland could stumble and fall if faced with Covington’s ground game. He’s got a few submission victories over the course of his professional career and his grappling can often be on point. This stylistic difference could become a problem for ‘The Future’.

However, in recent history, Covington hasn’t entirely made a lot of use of his ground game to achieve a victory. In his last matchup against Leon Edwards, the ball shortly slipped inside Covington’s court when Edwards attempted a clinch and a takedown. If Covington agrees to a WWE-style “I quit” match proposed by Garry, things could spiral for the young fighter.

If Covington decides to use his tools better against Ian Garry, who knows, he could get that win that he’s been looking for in the welterweight division.

The trash-talk could discourage like no other

Colby Covington is not known for mincing his words. The two already have much beef going on and it won’t go down if the UFC actually announces a matchup between the two fighters. Covington will make sure he holds nothing back from talking down the young Irishman.

However, Garry has his own brand of confidence where he ignores the noise once he’s inside the cage and keeps his smirk up even when faced with hatred during press conferences. Perhaps, it will be an interesting matchup to watch because of this.

Inactivity from Colby Covington

Colby Covington hasn’t been the most active welterweight to look out for. In fact, most of his last few fights were all fought in separate years. He defeated Tyron Woodley in 2020 and lost to Kamaru Usman a second time in 2021. He would then defeat Jorge Masvidal in 2022 which was one of his fastest returns to the cage since he fought ‘Gamebred’ four months after losing to Usman.

However, after that, he would take more than a year to return to the cage to fight Leon Edwards for the title in December 2023. If Garry wants a matchup, he might have to wait for a little while. The question is, is he ready to become a second Michael Chandler? What are your thoughts?
