THROWBACK: When Colby Covington Took Robbie Lawler’s Soul

UFC Welterweight Colby Covington has risen up the ranks to be one of the best 170-pound fighters on the planet. Chiefly, ‘Chaos‘ put any doubts about his legitimacy to bed in his headlining feature against former divisional champion Robbie Lawler. The aforementioned fighters met at UFC on ESPN 5 back in August 2019. Not to mention, the fight served as Covington’s long-anticipated return to action after he was stripped of his interim belt.

Colby Covington had captured the interim Welterweight title almost a year prior when he fought Rafael dos Anjos. The MMA world was beginning to see Colby’s varied skillset and truly considered him as a serious contender. Now, his over the top trash talk often leads to fans and media members to forget the comprehensive arsenal of weapons he brings.

UFC Welterweight’s: Colby Covington vs Robbie Lawler

The division one All-American from Oregon State stuck to Robbie Lawler like the plague from the opening moments of the fight. What’s more, he showcased his ability to play into the range of a dangerous striker like Lawler. Fight fans witnessed firsthand the overwhelming volume that Covington put forth.

‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler had very little in the way of resistance for the onslaught that came his way. He was being peppered with significant strikes to the head and body for the entire duration of the fight. Additionally, he effectively chained together his wrestling to keep Robbie’s lethal combinations at bay. When it was all said and done, Colby Covington had earned himself a record in the promotion.

‘Chaos’ set a record for the most strikes thrown in a UFC fight, with 541 total strikes. This performance solidified Covington’s ability to absolutely overwhelm and decimate a high caliber former champion. Additionally, this notion was further bolstered by the final scorecards that reflected his dominance.

Although Colby Covington lost the title fight against Kamaru Usman in his next bout, he’s as dangerous as ever. The standout performance against Robbie Lawler set a precedent that MMA wrestlers could put together exceptionally entertaining striking showcases.
