It was after UFC 295 that the whole MMA community was calling for the heavyweight title unification match between interim champion Tom Aspinall and undisputed champion Jon Jones. The Manchester native’s thunderous interim title-winning 69-second knockout made fans want to see potentially the biggest fight in MMA today, which even Dana White agrees. While the English star is ready for the potential matchup, ‘Bones’ is yet to give his green signal, which has delayed this fight longer than most people’s liking.

So, what is the real issue with Jones? Well, the first and foremost thing he said when he gave his thoughts about Tom Aspinall is that he’s not willing to risk it all and fight a dangerous up-and-comer. He decided not to retire and stick around for a while to fight someone who’s well-established and around the same age as him, prompting ‘Bones’ to issue a challenge to Alex Pereira. The Brazilian star loved it, but not Dana White.

This, of course, led to the financial side of things. Tom Aspinall seemingly confirmed that the issue revolved around the payout, and that isn’t a surprise since the undisputed champion was asking for “f— you money” for it. He doesn’t want to risk it all without the proper compensation from the UFC’s side. As the interim champion revealed to have plans to talk with Dana White about the fight, he said “Jon Jones doesn’t want to take the risk at the moment. So, I actually have a meeting tonight about it. So, we’ll find out what happens tonight. Believe it or not,” recently on the ‘High Performance’ podcast.

Tom Aspinall further stated, “I can’t do anything [to make the fight happen]. I think it’s just down to money, I think, on his side. So, I will fight whenever, wherever he wants, but it’s down to money, I think.”

Even though Jon Jones has made some fans feel disappointed in making them wait, Tom Aspinall appears to understand where the undisputed champion is coming from. Having fought generations of fights, legends and amassing one of the greatest records in MMA history, and taking a lot of punishment from his opponents, the Albuquerque native has a lot to lose than to gain from fighting Aspinall, who, for many, hasn’t even reached his prime yet.

“I just think that at this stage in his career… I just think that he’s like 37, 38 years old. Not only that, he’s got a million miles on the clock. So, he’s got a lot of damage on the body. He took a lot of shots to the head… That’s the reality of it,” Aspinall added. “When you put him in with a guy of my size, who has them credentials, at this stage in his career, I think Jon’s a smart guy and he realizes that. So he wants compensating financially for it.”

Yes, Jon Jones is back on reality television, and it’s going to air in Russia. Just like ‘The Ultimate Fighter’, there is another show of the same concept by the name of ‘ALF Global Reality’. The undisputed heavyweight champion will be appearing as a coach/captain opposite Stockton native and MMA icon Nate Diaz, with both of their teams squaring off against each other.

Jon Jones and Nate Diaz will be featured on the second season of the show, with the first season having former bantamweight champions Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan as coaches. Their heated rivalry was one of the highlights of the inaugural season, so it will be interesting to see if Jones and Diaz can do the same, as their names are definitely going to pull MMA fans into watching the show.

But what about Tom Aspinall? He’s ready to fight anyone for the undisputed title, but getting Jon Jones is going to be the cherry on top. We’ll have to wait and see what comes out of the English star’s aforementioned meeting with the UFC CEO. But do you think Dana White should give in to Jon Jones’ demand so that this fight, which has the potential to be the biggest in promotional history, to materialize? Drop your comments below.
