The wait is over. UFC 300 finally has its main event, as UFC CEO Dana White announced that light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira will defend his title against former champion Jamahal Hill at the top of the marquee anniversary card in April at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

However, speaking to reporters at the UFC 298 post-fight press conference that saw Ilia Topuria’s shocking second-round knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski to become the new featherweight champion, White revealed that he had offered Leon Edwards three different opponents for the UFC 300 main event, all of whom he had agreed to fight.

“Let me say this, Leon Edward has had like three opponents throughout this thing. Leon Edwards doesn’t say no to anybody. This kid is an absolute stud. He’s had like there I thrown at him during UFC 300. Was willing to take on anybody. Kid’s an absolute stud,” White said.

Dana White also mentioned that Edwards was eager to fight on the anniversary card and for that, he respects him very much.

White said, “Think about this, we call, and we’re talking about UFC 300, you’re going to headline, you’re going to fight this guy. Then we call back and say, ‘You’re going to fight this guy.’ Then a third time we call and change opponents on him again. It’s just crazy. This guy couldn’t care less. He’s up for the challenge. He’s ready to fight anybody. I love it and respect it very much.”

Fans expected a much-anticipated rematch between Edwards and Belal Muhammad after White confirmed in January that it would happen. But now as we know due to some reason, those fights didn’t materialize and we have the Pereira vs Hill main event for UFC 300.

Leon Edwards headlined UFC 296 as he successfully defended his Welterweight title against Colby Covington. Dana White later revealed that the event saw a 25% surge in PPV buys after the controversial pre-fight press conference between Edwards and Covington. Pereira-Hill is expected to be an electrifying affair given their stylistic matchup.

The UFC 300 main event between Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill is not expected to go the distance given the fearsome power both men possess in their hands. Hill vacated the Light Heavyweight strap after suffering an Achilles tendon rupture last year. Pereira then claimed the belt with a TKO win over another former champion, Jiri Prochazka, at UFC 295.

Pereira, who has become the biggest star in the UFC after he became a two-division champion, has been in contention for the UFC 300 main event since the beginning. Of course, fans would have liked to see him fight his nemesis Israel Adesanya for the third time to settle the score between them, but that will have to wait.

This announcement has also closed the door on Conor McGregor fighting on the card as he is unlikely to accept a non-main event slot. What are your thoughts on the UFC 300 main event?
