Colby Covington had a definitive performance against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. The brash welterweight superstar used his superior groundwork and cardio to beat his friend-turned-bitter rival, ‘Gamebred’. Though the veteran welterweight had one opening in the fourth round, Covington secured the bout via a unanimous decision.

As both fighters live in Miami, Covington teased Masvidal with his Instagram post and wrote, “50-44 and not even a scratch from that back stabbing bum Street Judas. Easy money. ALL HAIL THE KING!!!  #ufc272 #KingofMiami”

With this performance, Covington solidified himself as the best welterweight in the UFC, not named Kamaru Usman.

Since he has already fought and lost to the champion twice, Covington is in a weird position in terms of the welterweight championship picture. Thus, to get back to the pound-for-pound king, the top-ranked welterweight contender has to stack a winning streak and wait for the right opportunity.

Covington has not fought most of the fighters ranked in the top 10. Thus, he has no shortage of opponents in the division. With 2 to 3 impressive wins, he could see himself against the champion in a trilogy bout.

What’s next for Colby Covington?

With his callout of Dustin Poirier, Covington has shown his intention to pursue the big money fights after UFC 272.

However, Poirier doesn’t want Covington to take his shine and make money off his name. Thus, he is reluctant to take on ‘Chaos’ inside the octagon.

Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns seem to be the only big-name opponents left for Covington in the welterweight division. Hence, the winner of that UFC 273 bout could be next for ‘Chaos’ and make sense in terms of the rankings.

With limited options at money fights in the welterweight division, we could also see Colby Covington move up to the middleweight division.
