Recently, the news editor of MMA Fighting used his Twitter account to alert followers of Carlos Mota‘s ban. Mota, the flyweight competitor in the UFC, tested positive for meldonium. All athletes, whether active or retired, are forbidden from consuming meldonium. He failed the substance test, so the Nevada Athletic Commission decided to suspend the fighter from further matches. They completed the test in advance of his October 2022 fight with Cody Durden.

It was Mota‘s debut performance at the UFC. The commission’s suspension took effect on December 15 and continues to last. The flyweight fighter must, however, attend further meetings before hearing the final verdict.

Damon Martin wrote in his tweet “UFC flyweight Carlos Mota has been temporarily suspended after testing positive for meldonium following his fight against Cody Durden this past October, per the Nevada Commission. His actual punishment will be handed down at a future meeting.” The suspension, which was in effect as of December 15, has now been prolonged because the disciplinary process is still ongoing and they have not yet made the final decision. Joel Bekker, Nevada’s deputy attorney general, provided information about the suspension.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has outlawed meldonium use since the beginning. Since 2016, the substance has topped the list of substances that are outlawed. Athletes use the performance-enhancing substance meldonium to improve their performance. The UFC has not yet subjected Mota to any severe measures. The result of the match will remain unchanged as of now. However, ‘Tizil’ lost his last match with Durden at UFC Fight Night 213 in round three by a unanimous decision.

Waiting for the verdict

Mota and Durden‘s fight was not on the UFC schedule. A few days prior to the match, ‘Tizil’ was asked to take on Durden, and he was willing to do so. He was supposed to square off against Kleydson Rodrigues. A last-minute decision forced the cancellation of the two teams’ match. Before Mota started competing in the UFC, he was the flyweight champion of the LFA, where he had remarkable success.
