Originally scheduled to face Carlos Ulberg on January 20 at UFC 297, the fight fell through due to Ulberg’s undisclosed injury. However, just a week later, Reyes faced a significant health crisis himself. In a conversation with James Lynch on the ‘Middle Easy’ YouTube channel, Reyes revealed “And then a week later, I ended up getting blood clots, deep vein thrombosis. So yeah, I’m out for a minute.”

Expressing gratitude for being alive, Reyes emphasized the severity of the situation, acknowledging the fortunate early detection that prevented the blood clots from escalating into a pulmonary embolism.

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, happens when a blood clot forms in the deep veins, usually in the legs. If a piece of this clot breaks off and reaches the lungs, it can lead to a serious condition known as a pulmonary embolism, or PE, which can be life-threatening.

The UFC fighter recounted experiencing leg pain which he initially attributed to a result of training. However, he later found out it was a much more severe issue than he thought. He stated, “…my leg was hurting, I thought I pulled a muscle in my calf, so I got a massage and that’s the worst thing you can ever do. So lucky I didn’t die on that massage table right there. ”

As Reyes navigates this health setback, the focus remains on his recovery and well-being, underscoring the unpredictable nature of a fighter’s journey in and out of the UFC arena.

‘Bones’ reveals how Reyes almost ended his reign

Jon Jones, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, recently disclosed a pivotal moment during his last fight in the 205-pound division. Before his move to heavyweight, Jones had faced Dominick Reyes in a contentious title defense at UFC 247 in 2020 that ended in a unanimous decision victory for Jones.

However, in a revealing conversation on the OverDogs Podcast, Jones shared that Reyes pushed him to his limit! He confessed, “I got in the fight with him and he was giving me a true f**king run for my money. He was the only other person to do it to me outside of Gustafsson.”

However, Jones resisted the notion of conceding and decided not to give up on himself and eventually secured a decision victory in the fight. But the narrative underscores the significance of Reyes’ performance, positioning him as a formidable opponent who pushed the MMA legend to the brink!
