Dana White recently made an announcement that Robert Whittaker would be the fight who is going to land against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 290. Undeniably, Whittaker is argued to be one of the greatest middleweight fighters in the UFC. With Du Plessis rising with fury, Whittaker apparently seemed like one of the best opponents to put against ‘Stillknocks’. However, the former UFC contender and Hall of Famer, Chael Sonnen, had a different opinion.

Although he initially seemed excited about ‘The Reaper’ fighting Du Plessis, in the recent episode of his talk show, Sonnen revealed that Du Plessis should instead fight Israel Adesanya. ‘The American Gangster’ further clarified that Du Plessis versus Whittaker fight should be scrapped. Additionally, he provided some convincing reasons for why he thought Adesanya should be Du Plessis’s next opponent.

UFC legend doesn’t want Whittaker to fight Du Plessis
On his YouTube talk show, ‘Bad Guy Inc’, Sonnen talked about why the UFC should cancel Whittaker versus Du Plessis. “We shouldn’t have made Du Plessis versus Whittaker, should have we, guys? We should have made Du Plessis versus Adesanya, shouldn’t have we, guys? When Izzy says I’m not gonna fight anybody else until I fight him, Izzy doesn’t care if he doesn’t beat Whittaker,” said Sonnen.

Furthermore, the UFC veteran seemed to believe that putting ‘The Last Stylebender’ against Du Plessis would have been a better idea. He tried to justify his proposition by saying that Adesanya simply did not care if he lost. Even if the UFC middleweight champion had to take a loss, he would still go against Du Plessis.

Sonnen said, “As a matter of fact, Izzy predicts that Whittaker is going to beat Du Plessis. Izzy doesn’t care if he’s coming off a loss. He doesn’t care if he’s coming off a knockout humiliating defeat. He’s going to fight him next, according to Izzy.” Finally, he requested to make the fight happen.
