McGregor is one of the biggest stars in the sports but he is not the best pound-for-pound fighter at the moment. However, he would benefit from being in the rankings and the UFC can open doors for him by creating a super-light division. As per Anik, the UFC should embark on a new division in hopes of McGregor becoming the champion and sanctioning the welterweight division to be 175lbs.

Reflecting on the same, he stated, “Leon Edwards’s next title defense happening at 175 pounds and the UFC opening up a 165-pound division. I haven’t heard that internally; I think that’s just rumor mill stuff. But if ever there were a time to do that and try to create a championship for Conor McGregor, granted he hasn’t won a fight in four years, maybe this would be the time to strike on that initiative.”

Moreover, he thinks one should not disregard the possibility of Edwards fighting McGregor either. He stated, “I think it’s more likely that we see him in mega fights and super fights than it is that we see him in a championship setting. But if he beats Chandler, maybe he will fight Leon or the champ at 170 pounds; you never know.”

His opinion and insights are of great relevance as he is in constant communication with the authorities of the UFC. Moreover, his opinion is not exclusive as his colleagues also have a similar view.

Daniel Cormier, former heavyweight champion and a commentator also thinks a division makes sense and beneficial for McGregor. It is unlikely he will get a chance at the title in either the lightweight or welterweight division given his track record in the divisions in recent years.

Hence, this division gives him a fresh start and opens doors for him. According to Yahoo, he stated, “If you do 165, it has to be Conor,” he adds, “You’re introducing a new weight class – it has to mean something. You can’t have two normal fighters introducing the weight.”
