Despite impressing one and all with his performance at UFC 299, Makhachev felt Poirier still doesn’t deserve a title shot yet. His comments did not sit well with the 35-year-old who mocked the champion in his Instagram post. Now the champion has heated up the battle with his unique exchange. He took to his X account (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “Dustin if you could beat anybody, you’d be holding this belt right now, not me’.

In response to a comment appreciating Poirier, Makhachev replied, “His level is: permanent contender 🙂 how many title losses, 2? 3?”

Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen in his recent YouTube video already warned Poirier about this. He even came up with his own plans for the 35-year-old lightweight. Now with Islam Makhachev denying a title shot, what should Dustin Poirier do next? Well, the 46-year-old  already had the answer for it.

Chael Sonnen reminds Dustin Poirier about the BMF title in his recent interview

Despite proving his mettle at UFC 299 against Benoit Saint- Denis, it now seems that Poirier will have to wait for his title shot. Many felt that the 35-year-old had done enough to get a opportunity next. However, with this recent Tweet it now seems that the fans will have to wait a bit longer. But former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has already come up with his own plans for Poirier. He recently took to his YouTube channel and advised ‘The Diamond ‘ to go up against Justin Gaethje next. Sonnen feels if Gaethje wins his fight at UFC 300, Poirier should go for the BMF title next.

He said, “If you guys come on board and start chanting Poirier louder and loud enough. That’s the only chance. Otherwise it is going to go to Tsarukyan with the win. Now, If we do go in that direction, the match that I want to see is a title fight. I do think that Dustin goes for a title. But it’s the BMF title. I believe that if Gaethje goes out and Gaethje wins. That Gaethje vs Dustin. And Gaethje deserves a title fight, right? Like he’s already the guy.” It will be interesting to see whether the rematch between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier happens in the future or not.
