Jon Jones is the heavyweight champion of the world but thanks to his injury, the title might just fall in the hands of interim champ Tom Aspinall. Aspinall and Jones beefed for a while when the heavyweight claimed that Bones’ title should be taken away from him.
Now that the beef has died down, it looks like there’s a healthier outlook from the ends of both of them. Does that mean a fight between the two is imminent? Or is Jones focussing on tying up his loose ends and a conclusion against Stipe Miocic? Here’s what ‘Bones’ has to say about Aspinall.

Jon Jones has no hate for Aspinall

Jon Jones is one of the most terrifying fighters to be up against inside a cage. However, he still remains honorable as his prime slowly slips by. In fact, he is still thinking about how he’ll work against Stipe Miocic and yes, that does mean that it’s only Miocic that’s on Jones’ mind for the time being.

“I’m really going to base whether I continue to fight on how I compete against Stipe,” he told Submission Radio, “How I heal up from this injury you know, I could blow Stipe out of the water or it could be an absolute war and I feel like I need to take one step at a time before, seeing what I do next but the Tom fight is definitely not off the table.”

He also noted how he’s excited for Aspinall and his future in the heavyweight division which remains otherwise cold for most parts of the year. The truth is, many legends of the heavyweight division are now out of action. Aspinall surely subsisted a new aura into the division.
So, if he doesn’t get to fight Jones, who will have to fill those big shoes? Will it be Alex Pereira? Or yet another heavyweight will step up to do the job? Aspinall has to fight someone at some point and with Jones’ absence, nothing can be said for certain.

Does Jones fit in the picture?

In the same interview, Jones also revealed that the UFC had asked him to headline the UFC 300 main event. Unfortunately, Jones is still recovering from the injury that he sustained ahead of his Stipe Miocic bout that ended up getting canceled at UFC 295.

So, Jones won’t be fighting Aspinall anytime soon, or at all, because the fighter had heavily hinted at his retirement and continues to do so. During the build-up of his last fight, Jones announced to the world how he’d love to beat Miocic and honorably retire from the sport for good.

Now, after a devastating injury, if Jones is still up to it, he could challenge Aspinall next. But there is a significant age difference between the two. According to MMA standards, Aspinall is still young blood but then again, Jon Jones is deemed the GOAT for a reason. It could be a great fight but will it ever happen?
