While two-division UFC Champion Conor McGregor might be sidelined from UFC 303, his fellow Irishman, #7 ranked welterweight contender Ian Garry, is eager to compete on the same card against Michael Page. Page debuted with a win against Kevin Holland upon signing with the UFC in December 2023.

This comes after Garry’s unsuccessful challenge for a fight against Colby Covington, who is currently out with an injury. In a recent interview on a popular YouTube channel, Ian Garry took a dig at his rival Colby Covington, accusing him of fearing higher-ranked opponents, including himself.

Ian Garry targets Colby Covington

Colby Covington and Ian Garry haven’t been on good terms since December 2023. Covington insulted Garry’s wife, Layla Anna-Lee, over her book, “How to be WAG,” which reportedly discusses forming relationships with young professional athletes. Covington also spread rumors that Garry’s wife brought her ex-husband and sports nutritionist, Richard Cullen, into Garry’s training team.

During a recent interview with the New York Post Sports, Ian Garry was asked about Colby Covington. The host mentioned that Covington called Garry a “nobody” and wouldn’t fight him. In response, Garry claimed Covington fears fighters ranked above him.

Garry elaborated stating, “He’s not going out there and fighting a Gilbert Burns, who’s grappler-heavy, amazing Jiu-Jitsu fighter. He wants a stylistic fight that is going to benefit his style of wrestling. I’m him, and he said no. He’s running and he’s scared. I don’t think there’s ever going to be a scenario where Colby Covington accepts a fight with me anymore.

Moreover, Ian Garry believes Colby Covington’s career is nearing its end. He’s even called himself Covington’s “Kryptonite” and suggested the injury is a fabrication. However, the New York Post Sports host highlighted a valid point. Last week, in an interview with Adam Sosin, Covington dismissed Ian Garry as a “nobody” and indicated he preferred a bigger fight, suggesting Garry wasn’t a worthy opponent.

Colby Covington reveals why he dodged Garry

Covington and Garry have been throwing barbs since last year, constantly mentioning each other in interviews. Their potential fight never materialized. Colby Covington hasn’t fought since his injury following the loss to welterweight champion Leon Edwards. However, a recent interview suggests Covington might be moving on from a fight with Ian Garry.

It’s really on my time, and I’ll fight when I’m ready to fight and when I’m healthy. I want big fights. The kid’s a nobody. He just got a split decision over the 12th-ranked kid. I’ve been fighting world champion after world champion for the last seven years straight,” Covington said.

Colby Covington isn’t wrong. He remains the #4 ranked welterweight contender with a solid 17-4-0 record. Whether Ian Garry and Covington will fight anytime soon is uncertain. But if it happens, who would you root for? Let us know in the comments.
