So, it looks like UFC 302 was not Dustin Poirier‘s last sortir under the UFC banner. The Lafayette, Louisiana native has been a monumental fighter under the promotion but has never been an undisputed champion. The uncrowned prince of the lightweight division got a chance to redeem himself (possibly for the final time) at UFC 302 against Islam Makhachev but fell short for the third time. Although he contemplated hanging up gloves in his post-fight speech, it seems he wants one final showdown in the Octagon, and Jon Anik has the perfect suggestion for an opponent!

The veteran UFC commentator has come forward to demand a big-name farewell fight for Poirier to Dana White. While having a conversation on his podcast, Anik said, “Dustin has intimated that he wants to fight one more time and is on the very short list of opponents that actually make some fiscal and competitive sense is Nate Daiz.”

Anik makes a good point, although many argue that Poirier might have a significant upper hand over the 39-year-old Diaz. The pair were touted to trade leather at UFC 230 in November 2018. However, negotiations fell through and Poirier chose to address a long-time injury instead of waiting for Diaz and the UFC to come to terms.

“He [Nate Diaz] wanted it, he just couldn’t come to terms with ufc. They offered us the main event at MSG but he would only agree if it was on his terms. I was tired of playing games with the guy and that’s when i decided to address a injury I had been dealing with. Now you all know #facts.” explained Poirier in 2019.

If the fight had gone down, imagine how the landscape would have looked today. This lightweight contest would have been right on the tail of the McGregor vs. Khabib fight at UFC 229, just a month prior. Almost six years later, the chances of this fight getting made are just as slim, if not more, as they were back in 2o18.

Ahead of his UFC 302 bout, Poirier was talking about retirement and after the defeat, the call for retirement is more strong now. While having a conversation with the media, ‘Diamond’ asserted, “This is my story, and it happened the way it was supposed to happen for my journey. It’s been written already.”

‘Diamond’ has all the reason to call it quits. He has won it all, except the undisputed belt. The 35-year-old has made it clear that he does not want to keep fighting for the sake of fighting. But what about Diaz?

Is Dustin Poirier vs. Nate Diaz the fight to make?

Nate Diaz is finally getting luck on his side in his fighting. The Stockton native defeated Jorge Masvidal in their boxing fight this past weekend. Now that Diaz has completed his boxing endeavor, he might be looking to make a comeback to the MMA scene. How do we know that? Well, soon after his victory against Masvidal, Diaz expressed his willingness to get back to the Octagon and called out welterweight champion Leon Edwards.

Edwards was Diaz’s penultimate fight before leaving the UFC, one that showed promise of winning at the very last moment. So he’s cashing in on the ‘what if’s surrounding that bout. However, the UFC is unlikely to pursue that path and a fight against Poirier, someone lost in limbo in the title picture, makes much more sense.

There was also the buzz that Diaz had been approached by the UFC before the Masvidal bout for a potential comeback. Perhaps the promotion wants the Stockton native to have his trilogy bouts with Masvidal and Conor McGregor in the Octagon. If so, could a fight against Poirier be also on the horizon?

Well, this is where things get a bit interesting. The former interim lightweight champion was looking at a rematch against Makhachev, however, the champion rejected his proposal. After the hubbub, a fan proposed the idea of a Diaz vs. Poirier fight. ‘Diamond’ immediately reposted the tweet highlighting his intentions about the clash.
