Fans usually associate certain characteristics and mannerisms with different fighters. Some of them are known for their personality, the way they talk, or the way they present themselves to the fans. However, when it comes to Jose Aldo, UFC fans associate him with a visible physical feature, a scar on his left cheek.

When the UFC fandom talks about Jose Aldo, they point out the huge facial scar that he received when did even learn how to walk. He did even develop the ability to understand what was going on when he received that due to an emotional outburst by his eldest sister. Here’s what went down.

As a child, Jose Aldo’s family were spending some quality time with each other during a family barbecue. Apparently, the Hall of Famer was resting in his cot since he was a baby, after all. But Aldo became a victim of a scuffle that his sisters were having that resulted in his eldest sister, Josiline, throwing the baby cot at his younger sister, Rosiline, while their brother was in there. The cot smashed into the barbecue and Aldo’s face had to bear the brunt of it since the barbecue was lit and it left a permanent scar on his face. Fortunately, Aldo did not suffer any additional injuries from that incident.

“They were playing around and threw me in there. It was hot. I was a little baby. They were little kids. There was another time when my little sister broke my head. I have all kinds of stories,” Aldo revealed this story back in 2009. In the years to come, when ‘Junior’ would break out as a strong force in the UFC, he would get associated with a nickname that was an ode to his scar.

The connection behind the ex-UFC champ’s nickname and the childhood accident

Like many of the other UFC fighters, Jose Aldo has a nickname, too. Mostly, he’s called ‘Junior’, and the reason behind it is that he shares the same with his father. Hence, ‘Junior’ acts as a generational suffix. But when it comes to a nickname that is purely associated with himself, he’s called by the name of a famous 1980s movie, ‘Scarface’. If you have guessed it, this was because of Aldo’s facial scar.

Nevertheless, that scar did not affect the legendary Brazilian’s confidence. The scar remained while Jose Aldo went on to achieve an unfathomable amount of success in the mixed martial arts space. After all the dust settled, Scarface turned out to be one of the most well-known, respected, and loved MMA fighters ever.
