The last UFC event was an emotional one for former featherweight champion Max Holloway. After two rounds of all-out war, ‘Blessed’ finished The Korean Zombie in what turned out to be his opponent’s final bout. These two featherweights had spent close to a decade fighting in the promotion, yet this was the very first time that the two veterans had crossed paths. Keeping the spirit of sportsmanship alive, Max showed his respect to his retiring colleague during the post-fight interview. However, this wasn’t the only reason why Holloway’s latest octagon appearance was emotional.

Recently, his native land of Hawaii faced tragedy when a wildfire broke out in the state’s Maui County. Ranking as the worst in the island’s history, the tragedy has, to date, claimed the lives of more than 80 people, with many more still missing. Known for his proud Hawaiian heritage, it’s not difficult to imagine the former champion’s mental state after his appearance during the post-fight press conference. And now a former UFC champion has shown his support for the former featherweight king.

Referring to Holloway as ‘Hawaiian boy’ Cormier said: “Max was very emotional this week with everything going on in Maui. Very sad, and you could sense it in the press conference, obviously, but even in this post-fight interview. Max wants to deliver the message that everything he’s doing right now is for his fellow Hawaiians.”

For those unfamiliar, Holloway and Cormier share a warm friendship. Despite the weight difference, ‘Blessed’ has humorously called out ‘DC’ several times, many of which were impersonations of Nate Diaz‘s infamous call-out of Conor McGregor before their UFC 202 clash. Nonetheless, the forest fires in Maui are a terrible tragedy, and every bit of support counts. Just like his friend DC, UFC has also stepped up to support Holloway’s native land.
