The news of the fight between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev falling out has come as a shock to all fight fans. The news must’ve been particularly shocking for Edwards, who has been one of the unluckiest fighters in 2020. However, Edwards may still be able to fight on January 20th, as Vicente Luque is willing to step in on short notice.

Luque took to Twitter to announce that he wants the fight with the number 3 ranked welterweight on three weeks’ notice.

“I’m ready to get that rematch with @Leon_edwardsmma I know MMA fans would love to watch it! Let’s go @ufc @seanshelby @AliAbdelaziz00,” Luque wrote on Twitter.

Welterweight challenger Gilbert Burns also nominated his teammate Luque to step up to the occasion.

Luque and Edwards have already fought once before in 2017. The latter came out on top via a unanimous decision. Since then, Edwards has won all his fights thus building an eight-fight win streak. Luque has also bagged eight wins since the fight with Edwards, with only one loss coming against Stephen Thompson.

‘The Silent Assassin’ competed twice in 2020, bagging stoppage victories on both occasions.

For someone who is a top-five welterweight in the UFC, Edwards has been away from the Octagon for a significant time. His last fight came in July 2019 against Rafael dos Anjos. He was supposed to fight Tyron Woodley in London earlier this year. However, the entire was scrapped after a global pandemic broke around the same time.

He was supposed to fight Khamzat in the last event of 2020 but had to pull out following a Coronavirus scare. When it seemed that Edwards will finally end his hiatus in January, the fight has fallen off for reasons that are not yet clear.

Given the likes of Luque who are willing to accept the fight, Edwards can come back if he wants to. However, he’ll have to be careful as he doesn’t have a lot to gain from fighting and defeating Luque who is seven spots below him in the rankings.
