Jens Pulver: The forgotten inaugural lightweight champion

While some modern MMA fans may not be familiar with Pulver, he played a crucial role during the ZUFFA era of the UFC. Pulver’s remarkable journey began in September 1999 at UFC 22, where he quickly made a name for himself. After just four fights, he earned a title shot against Caol Uno. Resulting in a dominant unanimous decision victory and the inaugural lightweight championship in UFC history. Pulver also defended his title against the legendary BJ Penn. Unfortunately, contractual issues forced him to part ways with the organization for four years.

UFC president Dana White acknowledged Pulver’s accomplishments in a statement on the UFC website, citing memorable moments such as Pulver’s knockout of John Lewis and his initial victory over BJ Penn. Additionally, White emphasized Pulver’s historic bout against Urijah Faber in 2008. Which was a groundbreaking event in the history of the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) at that time.

The induction of these remarkable fighters into the Hall of Fame is a testament to their exceptional skills, contributions, and impact on the sport of mixed martial arts. Their legacies will forever be remembered, and their achievements will continue to inspire future generations of fighters.
